1st New Mexico Volunteers Clothing and Equipment List
Just a note before you begin:
Our group does not expect new recruits to purchase this entire list – and at first glance it looks quite overwhelming. We can supply most, but not all, of the items on this list, and we will – for a while. At some point you will be expected to supply everything yourself. Remember, the rule is first come first served. If you’re borrowing equipment, you might end up with pants that don’t fit as well as you want, or no shoes, or no firearm.
Clothes: Forage Cap, Shirt, 4 Button Sack Coat, Suspenders, Sky Blue Pants, Socks, Brogans (shoes)
Leather Gear: Bayonet Gaylord pattern, two rivet (matched to the bayonet), Cartridge Box, Cartridge Box Sling, Cartridge Box Plate (eagle), Waist Belt, Waist Belt Plate, Cap Pouch
Miscellaneous: Canteen (Tin or Stainless Steel), Haversack, Tin Plate, Knife, Fork & Spoon, Tin Cup, Knapsack, Blankets, Poncho
Rifle and Bayonet: Model 1842 Springfield Smoothbore Musket, or: Model 1861 Springfield Rifled Musket, Bayonet (matched to the rifle)
RECOMMENDED ORDER OF PURCHASE:
We recommend that you first purchase items of a personal nature or those hard to fit items, (size 13 shoes or 52 waist pants!)
First tier: Forage cap, shoes (brogans), canteen, haversack, tin cup, plate fork and spoon.
Second tier: Sack Coat, Shirt and Pants.
Third tier: Leather Gear (Cartridge Box, with Plate, Cartridge Box Sling with Plate, Waist Belt & Plate and Cap Pouch
Fourth tier: Rifle, Bayonet and Bayonet Scabbard
Finally: What ever meets your needs as a reenactor. There is a myriad of “stuff” from ponchos to keep you dry, housewives to sew your clothes, (no, it’s not what you’re thinking it is), cleaning kits for your muskets, play money, or playing cards!
